Topical interferon alpha-2b eye-drops for treatment in a case of ocular surface squamous neoplasia

Case presentation. 80 years old male with a history of ocular surface squamous cell neoplasia in his left eye, which was surgically resected ten years ago, was in remission. Referred growth of an ocular surface mass in the same eye following blunt ocular trauma, associated with mild ocular pain, epiphora, and progressive decrease in visual acuity. Upon evaluation, a conjunctiva-corneal neoplasia was identified with 100 % corneal involvement. Treatment. Neoadjuvant treatment with topical interferon alfa-2b 1M IU/ml four times daily was initiated, showing an immunoreduction effect. Computed tomography of the orbit and brain revealed areas of inferior-temporal calcification in the left eye, with no evidence of tumor spread to adjacent tissues. Optical ultrasound showed no tumor spread to the posterior pole. A no-touch excisional biopsy was performed, followed by treatment with 1M IU/ml interferon alfa-2b as adjuvant therapy. One year later, cataract surgery was performed with intraocular lens placement. The final best-corrected visual acuity in the left eye was 20/100 (logMAR 0.70). Outcome. The patient presented with favorable clinical evolution with no evidence of residual disease based on clinical evaluation or optical coherence tomography in the left eye. The patient was placed under oncological surveillance for six months without recurrence.
