Abstract

The objective of the research was to analyze economic factors that affect small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), in the city of Comayagua due to the opening of the Palmerola Airport. A quantitative process, non- experimental designs, descriptive scope, and transversal temporality were followed. The sample was applied to one hundred SMEs, using intentional no-probabilistic sampling, with the survey being the information collection instrument. Among the most outstanding results we find: Strengths: 93% of managers believe that their location is strategic with respect to customer service, suppliers, and their competition. Opportunities: 34.23% state that their company has the opportunity to expand locally, 27.93% regionally, 25.23% nationally, and 12.61% in the internationally market. 74% of the managers expressed that they have access to financing, while the remaining 26% reveal the lack of access to loans. Weaknesses: 48.10% of SMEs train their staff. 27.22% provide study opportunities to their human talent, only 20.25% are promoted and 4.43% facilitate training for promotion. Threats: 93% of SMEs do not receive any incentive from the government, which hinder the growth and expansion of this sector. The result indicate that SMEs are not prepared to face the challenges that the opening of the airport brings.
