Abstract

This study thoroughly examines the crucial role that faith-based organizations (FBOs) play in the lives and decisions of individuals seeking to migrate irregularly to other countries. Rooted in faith and the local community, these organizations provide comprehensive support to potential migrants, addressing their spiritual, emotional, and social needs. Through interviews and focus groups with religious and community leaders in the municipality of San Miguel Centro, El Salvador—both in urban and rural areas—the study has succeeded in understanding the scope and depth of the impact these institutions have in the current migration context. The findings suggest that FBOs not only influence the decisions and trajectories of migrants but also significantly affect the local community and the region's economy. Acting beyond limited material assistance, these organizations become fundamental pillars that offer spiritual, emotional, and social support to those contemplating the challenging path of irregular migration. By analyzing this phenomenon from a sociological perspective, it is possible to highlight the importance of understanding the role of FBOs in the complex world of migration. Their actions and programs impact not only individuals but also the communities of origin and destination, generating effects that transcend economic aspects and delve into social, cultural, and overall well-being spheres.
