Nursing experiences caring for COVID-19 patients in establishments of the Ministry of Health, El Salvador.

Abstract

Introduction.  In El Salvador, the arrival of COVID-19 caused uncertainty as we were not prepared for the health crisis like most countries in the world. In response, nursing dedicated intense efforts to direct patient care, showing remarkable professional commitment even risking their lives.

Objective. Describe nursing experiences while caring for patients with COVID-19 in Ministry of Health establishments. Methodology. This qualitative phenomenological study included twenty nursing professionals who experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted under ethical principles. The data obtained was coded into categories: professional practice, feelings and emotions, and social implications. Results. The nursing staff showed ignorance, inexperience, and fear of contagion. Teamwork and camaraderie reduced stress and strengthened learning, maintaining the family-patient bond. The proximity to death generated a strong emotional impact, mitigated by the spiritual experience. Negative feelings such as fear, uncertainty and stress were evident. Conclusion. The experience of nursing staff during the COVID-19 pandemic was complex and multifaceted. Through professional adaptation, managing intense emotions, and managing social implications, they demonstrated extraordinary resilience and an unwavering commitment to patient care. These lessons enrich current practice and set a precedent for future health crises, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, continuous preparation, and comprehensive care through social and institutional support in times of adversity.
