Bilingual interculturalism in Nicaragua achievements and perspectives

Abstract

The article examines the problems of bilingual education in Nicaragua. The historical background begins with the literacy campaign in native languages and the role of the Center of Research and Documentation of the Atlantic Coast (CIDCA) as the genesis of this project. Toe current situation of PEBI (Spanish for Bilingual intercultural Education Project) is addressed focusing on problems regarding the relationships between the local communities and the school system; the difficulties confronted by the program's steering committee, and the relationship with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education.
