Abstract

In a dynamic educational environment, the most frequent question from students and parents is whether the investment in higher education corresponds to the benefits obtained. Estimating individual gains takes into account costs and benefits, that is, how much money is paid to receive a university education compared to the amount paid back. Considering the above, the general objective of this research is to determine and analyze the rate of return on investment in higher education in Honduras for 2019. This will allow us to estimate the rate of return on individual investment during vocational training in higher education institutions, and from this, calculate the recovery time for said investment. The 2019 Permanent Multiple Purpose Household Survey (EPHPM) of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Honduras was used for the estimates. Based on this data, a log-linear econometric model was used to estimate the rates of return on education. The results show that pursuing a university degree represents a profitable investment for young people, with an average return of 10.6% and a minimum average payback period of 7 years, with a projected profitability of 35 years.
