University Social Commitment in Disaster Risk Management

Authors

Abstract

Universities, as agents of social transformation, have a responsibility to extend their academic work to communities by supporting local development processes that strengthen community capacities to address socioeconomic and environmental challenges. This ongoing connection with society helps generate relevant solutions to these challenges. Furthermore, these support processes strengthen the core functions of education, research, and university outreach, fostering meaningful learning experiences that ensure students’ well-rounded education, grounded in values, social responsibility, and commitment to communities. At the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, Managua (UNAN-Managua), social commitment is one of its guiding principles, focused on carrying out community initiatives that benefit the population in various areas of intervention, while strengthening the well-rounded education of professionals with human sensitivity and a strong commitment to social and community development, grounded in ethics and social responsibility.
