Case Report: Ischemic Stroke in an infant secondary to Protein C Deficiency Thrombophilia

Background: Protein C is a plasma protein that is activated, inhibits the formation of clots favoring fibrinolysis. It is a key factor in the regulation of coagulation, synthesized in the liver, and dependent on vitamin K. The deficit can be congenital or acquired; treatment consists of administering fresh frozen plasma or purified concentrate. Nuclear magnetic resonance is the technique of choice for detecting ischemic events. Case Report: Clinical case of infant referred to present a convulsive status secondary to a suspicion of meningitis, however with imaging studies; CT and MRI, an ischemic event of thalamus, basal ganglia and internal capsule was reported; the cause was determined to be a Protein C deficiency, as an initial treatment was given antithrombotic therapy with enoxaparin and subsequently transfusions of Fresh Frozen Plasma and anticonvulsants, presenting improvement to its output. Conclusion: Cases associated with protein C deficiency are rare in our environment. This report is the first published in the Honduran literature and contributes to expanding the list of more than 320 informed patients worldwide. In addition, stress the importance of studying patients with suspected primary hypercoagulability.
