Abstract

This study analyzes the lack of interest in reading among adolescents, an issue that affects academic performance and the development of critical thinking. Using a qualitative approach and a narrative literature review, it examines the main causes, effects, and strategies for fostering reading habits in educational and family contexts. The methodology consisted of reviewing and analyzing sources published between 2015 and 2025, selected for their relevance, timeliness, and academic rigor. The search was conducted in databases such as Scielo, RedALyC, Google Scholar, and ERIC, as well as specialized literature in education and the psychology of learning. The results identify the following factors contributing to a lack of interest in reading: technological advancements, excessive use of electronic devices, lack of family encouragement, unmotivating school methodologies, and limited promotion of critical thinking. These conditions lead to apathy toward reading, low reading participation, and difficulties in the development ofcognitive skills. The study highlights reading as an essential tool for the comprehensive development of adolescents and proposes strategies such as gamification, reading clubs, reading theater, and the pedagogical use of digital platforms. It concludes that strengthening the reading habit requires joint action among schools, families, and the educational community.
