Preliminary subacuatic survey of fishes associated to rocky bottoms in lake Ilopango

Abstract

With the aim of registering fish species that inhabit on rocky bottoms of Ilopango Lake, El Salvador, we carried out six subaquatic surveys through out scuba diving from December 2018 to March 2019. Surveys were usually performed at Cerros Quemados area, where one the authors registered the species counts that occurred in two transects (50 m long, 2 meters wide each side) at 4-5 and 8-9 meters deep. Results showed numerical dominance of Amatitlania nigrofasciata, other species with much lower abundance were: Astatheros macracanthus, Cichlasoma trimaculatum, Parachromis managuensis. We considered that the methodology used allowed the   observation of species associated to rocky bottoms during the day, however there are other habitats such as submerged, floating vegetation (Hydrilla verticillata) and soft bottoms that weren´t explored.
