Hans Günter Brauch (1947–2026) was a distinguished German scholar in peace, security, and global environmental change studies, founder of the Association for Peace Research and European Security Studies (AFES-PRESS) and the Hans Günter Brauch Foundation for Peace and Ecology in the Anthropocene (HGBS). As a professor and researcher at the Free University of Berlin, the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), Harvard, Stanford, and numerous universities across Europe, Asia, and Latin America, he became one of the leading figures in broadening and deepening the concept of security by incorporating its human, environmental, and global dimensions into peace and conflict studies. As a scientific editor, he promoted the publication of hundreds of scholarly works and coordinated the renowned Hexagon Series on Human and Environmental Security and Peace as well as the four landmark Handbooks on security, sustainability, and peace transitions, now considered standard international references. Committed to the decolonization of knowledge, he fostered the participation of scholars from the Global South and strengthened international academic networks such as the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) and the Latin American Council for Peace Research (CLAIP). Convinced that peace requires the integration of social justice, environmental sustainability, and human security, he devoted his life to research, higher education, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge as essential tools for addressing the challenges of the Anthropocene. His intellectual and human legacy continues to inspire the international peace research community. In memoriam.
