Abstract

An essential component of university education is to engage students in research projects and scientific events, as this promotes the acquisition of scientific knowledge and the development of research skills. The purpose of this study is to use bibliometrics to characterize the research products presented at the Third Student Scientific Congress on Science Education.  Using a retrospective and descriptive quantitative approach, all of the research presented at the event was analyzed. The variables studied were: type of work presented at the event, number of authors, number of references used, authors' degree programs, study approach, data collection instruments, keywords, subject matter of the study, informants, and sampling type. The results showed that 54% of the participants were female, 100% of the majors offered by the department participated in the conference, with 36% of the Physics-Mathematics major leading in terms of participation, and 89% of the works took the form of scientific articles. In addition, the predominant number of authors per paper is four (46%), 64% of the references are in the range of 6 to 15, and with regard to the most commonly used research approach and instrument, qualitative research represents 64% and questionnaires 92%. It is concluded that the works presented at the congress are characterized by the predominance of scientific articles, the participation of four authors per work, the use of a qualitative approach, and a tendency to use questionnaires as the primary data collection instrument.
