Abstract

In increasingly competitive scenarios, higher education institutions (HEIs) must contribute to the training of highly skilled professionals to enter the world of work. For this reason, the purpose of the study is to identify the research skills developed by students participating in the Student Scientific Congress on Science Education (CCE). The study is mixed, with the quantitative element being the survey and the qualitative element being the focus group. The sample consists of 22 students participating in the CCE and five teacher mentors who guided the research process. The results of the study show that 22 students from the Mathematical Physics, Mathematics, and Biology programs participated, with 62% of them believing that participation in events (congresses) allows them to develop research skills. In addition, 19 students report having an acceptable level of research skills, which are identified in the case study as problem definition and methodology, fieldwork preparation, and continuous evaluation of the process. The study concludes by highlighting the importance of participating in student scientific events and developing formative research as part of academic training
