Abstract

Background: The use of organic amendments in organic production has gained relevance in recent years, although this practice has existed for some decades, due to the need to promote sustainable agricultural practices that improve soil fertility and reduce the use of chemical inputs. Objective: To evaluate the effect of organic amendments (biochar, cattle manure, chicken manure) applied to the soil. Methodology: The research was conducted in the Area of Knowledge of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences at UNAN
León in 2024. Six treatments were used: control, biochar + chicken manure, biochar + cattle manure, chicken manure, cattle manure, and biochar, in 3m x 3m plots. The pH and total nitrogen variables were evaluated in the amendments. In the soil treated with the amendments, the volumetric moisture content was measured using a TDR (Total Dispersible) and bulk density using the cylinder method. Results: The chicken manure amendment had a higher nitrogen content at 2.85%. No significant differences were found for bulk density or soil pH; however, a tendency for bulk density to decrease was observed when applying cow manure with biochar and cow manure alone. Significant differences were found in moisture content, with 132.41%
obtained when applying chicken manure and 110.39% with cow manure alone, followed by biochar + chicken manure and biochar + cow manure at 82.26%. Conclusion: Chicken manure tends to provide more nitrogen, although its slightly acidic pH may require adjustments depending on the soil. Combining it with biochar results in a more stable pH.
