Abstract

Background: The integration of agricultural and livestock activities is key to improving the efficiency and sustainability of productive systems. This analysis focuses on the interaction of the subsystems that comprise the agricultural production system at the "Don Jorge" Ranch in Suchiapa, Chiapas. The objective is to understand the structure and dynamics of the bovine and agricultural subsystems, aiming to optimize productive management and resource integration. Methodology: The research, carried out between January 2023 and January 2024, used a case study approach with periodic visits and data collection. Data were gathered on milk production, calf weight, forage consumption, feed costs, efficiency, and animals for sale in the livestock subsystem. For the agricultural subsystem, biomass per hectare, fertilizer usage, costs, and fuel consumption were measured. Factor analysis was conducted to simplify and analyze key variables. Results: The bovine subsystem is divided into three periods: fattening (January-May), milk production (June-September), and decision-making (October-December). Fattening occurs during the dry season under an intensive system, while milk production increases in the rainy season due to the availability of fresh pasture and calving. In the decision-making period, the animals benefit from agricultural residues, and sowing strategies are adjusted. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of adapting management strategies to seasonal variations to improve the efficiency and sustainability of productive systems, providing a solid foundation for future research in the region.
