The Latin American Baroque Ethos: Divergences Between Sociology and Philosophy of Culture

In the following paper,the concept of Latin American “Baroque ethos” is analyzed by comparing the positions of Pedro Morandé and Bolívar Echeverría and its use in their cultural proposals of sociology and philosophy, from the discussion on developmentalist and capitalist modernity, respectively. While Morandé proposes that the ethos of the Baroque period consolidates the core of the cultural identity of Latin America from a synthesis derived from the encounter in the Conquest, essential to solve the problems of the modernizing paradigm, Echeverría speaks of Baroque ethos as a strategy of resistance historically transversal and preponderant among others in the face of the contradictions of capitalist modernity, which prevailed in the reordering of the Latin American colonial world. It is emphasized that the convergences and divergences between the two approaches arise from the way and sense they use the concepts “culture”, “identity” and “ethos”, with Morandé rescuing the first two and Echeverría the last one.
