Breastfeeding constitutes one of the most effective interventions for promoting child health and comprehensive development. This editorial highlights human milk as a unique and irreplaceable biological fluid, capable of providing all essential nutrients required by the infant during the first months of life, in addition to antibodies and immunological factors that strengthen host defenses and reduce the risk of infections and disease.
Beyond its nutritional benefits, breastfeeding fosters a profound emotional bond between mother and child, supporting healthy emotional development through skin-to-skin contact and the strengthening of attachment. It also represents a high-impact strategy in contexts of social vulnerability, illness, malnutrition, and extreme poverty.
The editorial emphasizes that the promotion of breastfeeding should remain a public health priority. To achieve this, it is necessary to strengthen education from early stages of life, adequately train healthcare professionals, and develop policies that facilitate breastfeeding practices across family, community, and workplace settings. The importance of legislation that protects breastfeeding and regulates the marketing of breast milk substitutes is also underscored.
Furthermore, contemporary challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and maternal obesity are analyzed, noting that with appropriate preventive measures and timely professional support, breastfeeding remains a safe and beneficial option. Finally, it is concluded that a comprehensive and multisectoral approach is essential to ensure that more mothers and children can benefit from this fundamental practice for the health and well-being of society.
