Growth rate in asthmatic patients treated with inhaled corticosteroids in the Honduran Institute of Social Security

Background: Asthma is the most prevalent chronic respiratory disease in the world, with some 300 million people affected, which causes a marked decrease in the quality of life of patients and their families, and a high economic cost for individuals and for society. Asthma usually originates in childhood and is one of the main chronic diseases in children.
Objective: To analyze whether there is an impact on growth velocity in asthmatic patients treated with inhaled corticosteroids who attend the outpatient clinic of the Instituto Hondureño de Seguridad Social in the period of 2021-2022.
Patients and method: Descriptive-analytical, retrospective study carried out in pediatric patients who met the inclusion criteria, data collected with a 17-variable instrument.
Results: the most prevalent age group were schoolchildren together with the male sex, allergic rhinitis was the most frequent comorbidity, and the most used inhaled steroid was beclomethasone, all patients used low and intermediate doses of CIS, most of them were used by more than 1 year. Most of the patients studied had a growth trend appropriate to their age.
Conclusions: An impact on the growth velocity of the studied patients, users of inhaled corticosteroids, was not established.
