Abstract

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and performs essential functions that extend far beyond its aesthetic role. This editorial highlights its importance as a protective barrier against external agents, including pathogenic microorganisms, ultraviolet radiation, and potentially harmful chemical substances. Structurally, the skin is composed of three main layers: the epidermis, which provides physical protection; the dermis, which contains blood vessels, nerve endings, and hair follicles; and the hypodermis, which is responsible for fat storage and contributes to thermoregulation.

In addition to its protective function, the skin serves as a complex sensory organ, enabling the perception of stimuli such as touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. It also plays a critical role in maintaining homeostasis through mechanisms such as sweating and vascular dilation or constriction, which help preserve a stable internal body temperature. Furthermore, the editorial emphasizes that changes in skin color, texture, or the appearance of lesions may serve as early indicators of systemic or dermatological diseases.

In the pediatric setting, dermatological disorders account for approximately 6% to 24% of medical consultations, with a particularly high prevalence in developing countries. The article underscores the importance of education on skin care practices, including adequate sun protection, proper hydration, and healthy lifestyle habits. Finally, findings from a 2022 study conducted at the Northern Regional Hospital of the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS) are presented, identifying atopic dermatitis, diaper dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis as the most common dermatological conditions encountered in pediatric dermatology outpatient consultations.
