Recollections and Reflections on the Integrated Pest Management Program in Zamorano from 1980 to 1993

Abstract

The Integrated Pest Management program carried out by an interdisciplinary team in Zamorano from 1980 to 1993 made important contributions to regional scientific and technical progress as well as to Zamorano’s evolution and educational programs. The IPM program left a legacy in regional pest management practices, teaching materials, and rural development practices. The program had major impacts because it was based on open-ended risk-taking, operated with minimal interference from both the donor and the host institution, and focused on human creativity rather than predictable, measureable outcomes.
