Abstract

Objective: to determine the main causes of extraction of dental organs donated to the biobank of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad de El Salvador (BBOD-FOUES). Materials and Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. The total number of dental organ records was N=2,402. Data were obtained from the records of dental organs donated to the BBOD-FOUES in 2019. Approval was obtained from the National Ethics Committee (CNEIS/2019/009). The independent variables analyzed were tooth type, sex and age group and the dependent variable: causes of extraction. The data were analyzed in the SPSS-26 program, χ2 was applied to establish the relationship between variables, with a confidence level of 95 %.  Results: The main causes of extraction were dental caries (56.33 %) and periodontal disease (30.77 %), with p=0.002 for both men and women. Dental caries was the main cause of loss of lower molars (75 %) and upper premolars (62.19 %), while for periodontal disease it was lower incisors (75.64 %). The main cause of exodontia in children under 50 years of age was dental caries (83 %) and in those over 51 years of age periodontal disease (17 %). According to the variables type of tooth and age, no significant differences were found in the causes of extraction. Conclusion: The main causes of extraction were dental caries and periodontal disease, showing the importance of having biobanks that contribute to carrying out studies that provide the basis, among others, for new biomaterials and new treatments aimed at preserving dental tissues.
