Linguistic attitudes and ideologies in relation to the planning and revitalization processes of indigenous languages: A review of the State of the Art

This article presents a review of the state of the art on linguistic attitudes and ideologies and their relationship with the planning and revitalization processes of indigenous languages. Key concepts are examined from classical and contemporary perspectives in sociolinguistics, social psychology, and linguistic anthropology, emphasizing how linguistic attitudes influence the preservation, transmission, and valuation of minority languages. The review was conducted through systematic searches in academic databases, university repositories, and specialized literature, using keywords related to linguistic attitudes, indigenous languages, language ideology, and language policy. The findings show that the attitudes and beliefs of speakers and communities directly impact revitalization and language planning processes, affecting cultural identity, language prestige, and social inclusion. Additionally, there is limited research in the Colombian context on the interaction between linguistic attitudes and indigenous languages, highlighting the need for in-depth, context-specific studies to guide public policy and intercultural educational strategies. In conclusion, the review emphasizes the importance of integrating multidimensional and contextual approaches to understand the dynamics of linguistic attitudes and ideologies and to strengthen the revitalization of indigenous languages.
