The Gender-based violence: A present Symbolism

Abstract

This article represents an analysis carried out from the perspective of symbolic interactionism based on the conceptual and real differences between violence and aggressiveness and especially between sex and gender, to understand the etiology of gender violence from a theoretical-documentary position; The author analyzed the different types of violence from their symbolism and media representations, to show gender violence, centered on violence against women, as a sign of chauvinism still present in our societies. This research also addressed the common view of gender based violence and therefore its acceptance through the transmission of patterns of gender behavior, symbolisms -that are sometimes even imperceptible in social consciousness-that are learned, inherited, transmitted and repeated which makes the prevention and eradication of various forms of violence a complex task. The author concluded that gender violence is a symbol transmitted and learned from multiple sources, which can be avoided through interdisciplinary but also social work.
