This paper presents the development and implementation of a prototype automated bell system for public schools in El Salvador, focused on improving time management and operational efficiency in educational institutions. The project prioritized schools in rural areas of the central and
paracentral regions of El Salvador, covering 14 primary and secondary schools within the national educational system. Using low-cost and open access components such as the Arduino UNO microcontroller, the HC06 Bluetooth transceiver, and the App Inventor for mobile application development, the system proved adaptable to diverse deployment scenarios. The automated bell system activates and deactivates school bells according to predefined schedules configurable through an Android-based mobile application, offering an intuitive and efficient user interface. Students were actively involved in the project, applying their skills in electronic design, coding, and system assembly to address a real-world challenge. The modular and flexible design of the system not only ensures affordability, but also facilitates scalability for future enhancements such as remote configuration through IoT and automation of additional school functions. This initiative, developed within the framework of university social responsibility, demonstrates the potential of open-source technologies to transform educational environments, while providing a platform for technical and social learning.
