The health system of El Salvador

Abstract

In Latin America and specifically in El Salvador, the set of political, economic, social and demographic transformations of the decade 1980 - 1990 and its subsequent consequences, have had a negative impact on the health level of the population with the lowest income that have had the greatest limitations to access social services.
In these conditions, even though there may be an "apparent improvement" in some average indicators (partly due to the limitations of the sub-registry of viral events and the deficient information systems), the health of the poor population has deteriorated more than that of other groups, having to face an epidemiological structure that favors the abrupt and significant occurrence of diseases that were controlled (cholera, malaria, tuberculosis), or that were unknown (AIDS).
This situation determines one of the most salient characteristics in the negative sense of the health system: dissatisfaction with inequality and / or lack of equity in the health model.
