Abstract

This article will demonstrate that most military dictatorships in Latin America were imposed and supported by the United States. This has been a systematic and long-standing strategy. The benefits the White House has reaped from this foreign policy can be summarized as geopolitical control over its southern neighbors. This has entailed the plundering of the natural resources of the subjugated countries, with the approval of obedient military regimes. Furthermore, it has prevented any serious challenge to U.S. hegemony south of the Rio Grande, a subcontinent they call their “backyard.” Although the U.S. has invaded its neighbors militarily on several occasions, the military regimes sponsored by the White House have spared Washington the political and economic costs and the lives of its own soldiers that each invasion has entailed.
