Seroprevalence of HIV/AIDS in prisoners detained in the prison system of Chinandega, in the period January-June 2007

Abstract

The Chinandega Penitentiary System houses a large number of inmates with promiscuous sexual behavior and risky practices for HIV infection. The main objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of HIV among inmates. Methodological Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. A simple random sample of 112 individuals was selected. Results: Two confirmed positive cases were found using the Western Blot test, resulting in an overall seroprevalence of 1.7%. The sociodemographic data revealed: age group 25–29 years (31.3%), male sex (66%), secondary education level (44.6%), and single status (44.6%).

Regarding HIV/AIDS seroprevalence: males (2.7%), primary education level (5%), married individuals (5%), history of STIs (7.1%), multiple sexual partners (3.2%), and occasional condom use (3.5%). Conclusions: There is a high seroprevalence of HIV infection among inmates in the penitentiary system, 48.9 times higher than the national seroprevalence.
