Torus, a benign bony structure that lodges inside the oral cavity, has been the object of study to better understand its prevalence and characteristics in a clinical context.
Objective: To describe the prevalence and morphologic characteristics of torus in patients treated in the area of Fixed Prosthesis in the Dental School Clinics at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH-CORTES) during the first semester of Dentistry, including its distribution in the palatal and mandibular regions, as well as the classification into nodular, lobular, multinodular and flat torus, and the related subclassifications. Methodology: Descriptive study with a sample of 140 patients aged 17-72 years, selected by non-probabilistic convenience sampling from archived clinical records. The information was obtained through records, images and analyzed using the SPSS IBM 2022 statistical program. Results: Thirty-five patients (files) with torus were identified out of 140 files reviewed, representing a prevalence of 25% of patients with torus. Three of the thirty-five patients presented more than one torus. Therefore, there were 38 torus distributed, 19 in the mandible (50%) and 19 in the palatal region (50%). Of the 19 mandibular torus, 15 (79%) were bilateral and 4 (21%) unilateral. Regarding morphological forms, 19 (50%) were nodular, 9 (23.7%) multinodular, 7 (18.4%) lobular and 3 (7.9%) flat. Conclusions: This study offers a comprehensive view on the prevalence and characteristics of torus in the studied population, underlining the importance of its identification and classification, contributing to the understanding of this condition.
