The objective of this research is to analyze socioeconomic and demographic inequalities related to land tenure in rural areas of Honduras, focusing on the comparison of indicators disaggregated by sex between women and men. The methodology used was quantitative, based on the analysis of secondary data from the National Agrarian Institute (INA). Socioeconomic surveys of property title files issued between 2010 and 2019 were used.
In Honduras, the results reflect a clear inequality in the issuance of property titles. Rural women not only receive fewer property titles compared to men; for every 100 women, 168 men benefit. 89.7% of women own their homes on titled properties. Some social characteristics, such as marital status, influence whether they are eligible. Single women are more likely to receive property titles than those who are married or in a common-law relationship.
