Zamorano University is best understood as a high-quality, impact-oriented university of applied sciences, committed to a holistic education based on hands-on learning, character formation, and direct engagement with real-world problems. Zamorano has never been merely a vocational school, nor should it aspire to become a traditional research university focused primarily on conventional academic publications as a performance metric. In this editorial, we explain why research and development (R&D) are essential components of a modern, high-quality university like Zamorano, and how these activities directly support: (•) The professional and personal development of our students. (•) Strong partnerships with governments, donors, and the private sector. (•) Our socioeconomic impact on agriculture, food systems, and the environment in Latin America.
