Abstract

Environmental management and sustainable development are two fundamental concepts today that have become essential pillars to address environmental challenges and promote an equitable and healthy future for coming generations. Environmental management refers to the set of practices, policies, and strategies aimed at responsibly managing natural resources and minimizing the negative impact of human activities on the environment. It is within this framework of building a better world that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can take the lead, as they are spaces for specialized training in different areas of knowledge. The objective of this study was to analyze the contribution that environmental management can make to generate sustainable development in Higher Education Institutions in El Salvador. To achieve this, an interview guide was applied to representatives of rectors, professors, and directors from the research and social outreach departments of accredited HEIs throughout the country. Among the findings of the research, it was observed that actions are indeed being taken to promote the rational use of resources, such as energy, paper, and water savings. Additionally, as a cross-cutting axis, environmental topics are being included in various subjects and research and outreach projects. HEIs must increase their efforts to encourage the participation of the university community in actions in favor of the environment. Among the recommendations to strengthen current efforts are the search for international alliances and the creation of a green fund to support the implementation of environmental management policies.
