Open Access to Science: Challenges and Opportunities for Latin America When talking about open access to scientific publications, I like to remember the definition given in the Budapest Declaration on Open Access (2002): “It means the fact that any individual interested in this literature can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to full texts of scientific articles and use them for any legitimate purpose, freely and openly; the only restriction of open access is to grant authors respect for the integrity of their work and the right to be adequately recognized and cited.” I think it is a really complete and brilliant definition, which also invites us to dream of a world in which scientific knowledge is collaborative, shared and allows its application both locally and regionally.
